bkmoon when he has to write the ending where lloyd gets married to satisfy the monarchical heteronormative standard of Noble Has to Have a Heir but the only character that lloyd has actual good and healthy chemistry with is his knight whom is always by his side, will not hesitate to die for him, has shared the essence of their being to one another, and whom he literally wrote 400+ slowburn chapters of their relationship with a homoromantic subtext and not the one female character who only trusts him because of the interference of a Higher Power

i think my issues with the canon romance at the end can be summarized by that competition alicia holds to win lloyd's hand.

she's like 'oh your new body sucks you need to marry someone who can protect you 24/7' so she holds a tournament to find the strongest woman in the continent and marry him to her so he'll have built-in bodyguard. which is objectively the funniest thing she could've done i love her so much. but. like. it's so unnecessary, redundant and also just,,,, factually incorrect??? ajdhka god lemme explain

but,,,, lloyd already has a bodyguard who's at his side 24/7. like. that's very much a plot point of the entire novel. there's literally a character who's arc is about coming to care about lloyd above anything else and deciding to stay at his side for the rest of his life to protect him. like. that's very much a thing that happened. it literally takes us 320 chapters to get to that point why are you acting like you're doing something new here

a swordsmanship competition. to decide who gets to marry lloyd. remind me what character have we spent the entire novel being told and shown over and over and over again is the most powerful and strongest swordsman in literally the entire world???

right. but he can't participate. because he's not a woman. which i think it's the point to this rant.

i don't think i need to spell it out but i'm gonna anyway.

the only reason javier isn't the one to end up with lloyd is because he's a man. because even by the in-universe made up requirements he's the most qualified one to do so, except that he's not allowed to even participate because he's not a girl.

and y'know what's the extra thing that just. makes me go a little insane because it's the one detail that makes me doubt for one second that all of this wasn't just pure chance or coincidence and instead is bk moon taunting us. y'know what it is.

what character is the only one who canonically can and has passed for a woman with no issue whatsoever in a seemingly out of nowhere gag that never comes up again. do you remember.

right. yeah.

so we have,,, a character who is devoted to our main character and has sworn to protect him for the rest of his life with everything he has, who is the strongest swordsman in the entire world and who can easily pass for a woman.

and then the main character is supposed to marry whoever wins a competition to decide who gets to protect him for the rest of his life, who is the strongest swordsman in the country and where only women are allowed to participate.

and i'm not supposed to read anything into that.

but seriously. this little tidbit that was probably just meant to be a joke about how alicia came to marry lloyd just,,, really highlights how unnecessary and redundant their romance feels to me

like. why would lloyd need to marry alicia. when he already has javier.

They'd been supposed to intercept 3 minutes ago, and it wasn't like regions of ramshackle villages like this had any dedicated defensive measures. The local council just paid mercs like Pulsar's team to patrol around and hoped they scared off raiders or were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. Pulsar wasn't feeling real lucky right at that moment. "Private Seraphim, so help me God if you don't-" Finally, FINALLY, her radio crackled, and a groggy voice muttered, "Hey, boss, morning, chill the fuck out or something. What are we working with here, anyway..." "It's a few dozen shard drones, again, 60 klicks south-south-east, whoever's camped out in the canyons is still trying to catch us off guard. Which is apparently working, by the way? Do you want to explain why you weren't up on time?" "Hey, Pulsar, just, like, relax or something. Remember last night? You were all, Oh, let's just watch some TV and cuddle, and then you ended up begging me to fuck your brains out. You were plenty laid back after that." the need to have in hand the stories i’d been wanting to read my entire life finally hit critical mass and overturned the debilitating social anxiety/OCD magical thinking that told me i would be pelted with eggs and rotten fruit for daring to inflict my thoughts (and thots) upon other residents of the internet. only took 25 years, folks! prior to this i was simply trying to cram all of my nascent fanned fiction into the tags field of random posts on tumblr dot edu, which i’m sure was not annoying AT ALL for anyone making the posts that came under my fire.

now obviously i do not have that problem and i tag things normally.

eurydice hadestown is very handy with quick mental math and its applications, i.e. calculating tips, making change, emergency budgeting, guesstimating prices, etc. orpheus hadestown can subdivide ONLY in the context of musical time signatures and only ever passed a math class beyond algebra 2 because he has big sad eyes and his teachers felt bad that he was clearly trying really hard. this is perpetually baffling to eurydice, who is just like "if you tip 15% it’s 10% of the bill plus half of that, so you just move the decimal up a place and then divide that number by two and then add them and—" and orpheus is like no no that’s already too many steps. and she’s like well what do you just not tip your barista because it’s too many steps? asshole? and he’s like of course not! i always tip two dollars. and she’s like on a four dollar coffee? that’s a 50% tip?? and he’s like well no that one was $4.38, see, it’s just easier to not have to do the math. and she’s like [screams]

for orpheus’ part, he can diagram chord progressions to an extent that causes eurydice to lapse into a defensive coma, but of course that has no practical applications.

i dunno, man, all the stuff that works for me is stuff that’s been said more eloquently elsewhere. if you’ve written one sentence that’s a sentence that didn’t exist before and therefore you have increased the thing. the time will pass anyway so you may as well pass it making something. sometimes you just need to look at another project, another fandom, another creative hobby, a tree, instead of your current project. you’re allowed to just think about it if thinking about it is all you have the heart to do. it’s easy to mistake the plateau before leveling up for stagnation, and it’s easy to mistake the upward climb for rotting and crumbling into dust.

you’re always improving. every day you wake up and see with your eyes and hear with your ears and think about the world around you, you’re banking sense-impressions and test-running dialog and feeling emotions that might one day find their way into a project. and this too is writing, in its way.

i'm about to be a bitch about alloyd so like. skip ahead if you're not into that ig.

the thing thats grinds me the most about alloyd is that,, we've seen lloyd plan out living the rest of his life at someone's side. we've seen him actively wish to spend the rest of eternity with someone. we've seen him think what sounds suspiciously like marriage vows about someone.

i am not joking or exaggerating here are the quotes:

That’s why, you bastard. I’m going to take care of you until the very end. Once I, your wise and older friend, solve the restoration of destiny problem, you’re going to enjoy the rest of your life by my side in peace. [...] He smiled at Javier and thought to himself. Lloyd felt reassured by Javier's presence as he gazed at him. He could not have gotten this far without the knight. Therefore, he did not want to lose Javier and hoped they would keep bickering with each other for eternity. -ch 361

He thought he'd always be with Javier for the rest of his life. Just like now, he thought they'd spend all their time together moving forward. And like they always did, they'd be by each other's side during hard times. Happy moments. Relaxed days. They'd share all these moments as they exchanged insults and corny jokes, growing old as a lazy lord of a fiefdom and his knight. Lloyd always thought so. The thought just came naturally, without much effort from him, much like breathing. Lloyd believed that Javier would always remain by his side as that was how it had been until now. -ch 222

and at no point in any of those occasions has he ever sounded remotely afraid, threatened or uncomfortable with the idea.

so how come he is all of that when it comes to the idea of marrying what is supposed to be his canon love interest? like???

This is bad. Really bad. Terrible feelings struck his gut. Lloyd's lifelong wish was to find a rather ordinary woman to fall in love with, before getting married and having kids with her to lead an unremarkable family life. This was the extent of the luxury he had always dreamed of, not the frantic romance with the mightiest queen in the entire continent. I can see and feel it. I can sense it. This isn't good. Lloyd could see himself in the queen's pockets, like a scaredy cat in the presence of a ferocious lioness. -ch 390

Lloyd became speechless, even though he desperately wanted to call it an absolute abuse of power, tyranny, and dictatorship. But I'm kind of excited and glad... except what kind of marriage proposal is this threatening...?! But Lloyd couldn't bring it out in words, as his queen had already taken him by his hand. It was rough, yet warm. He could feel every heartbeat that was clearly pounding faster than usual. Ugh. There goes my dream of ordinary living. Lloyd quickly wiped off the tear that was about to fall from his eyes at the thought of the frightening romance. -ch 393

does this sound like someone in love???? like?? genuinely?? is this really what the main character should feel about his love interest???

i'm not even saying that the way lloyd feels about javier is inherently romantic, him feeling perfectly comfortable and hopeful about spending the rest of their life together is perfectly explicable by their close friendship.

but why make your protagonist sound so terrified of the idea of marrying what is supposed to be the love of his life?? when you never did that when writing about his other close relationship??
